“…for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances…” – Philippians 4:11b
An armchair philosopher once declared, “Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It’s cheaper.” I applaud this creative solution to an age-old problem, but I prefer God’s advice on the subject of comparison. God tells us to simply not play the game at all.
Comparison is a destructive trap. The fact is, we can always find someone who is smarter, prettier, in better shape, or who just has more “stuff” than we do. On Monday, we might be so proud of our shiny new car, but on Tuesday, a newer one is parked in the driveway next door. And that 52-inch TV will soon pale in comparison to your brother-in-law’s 68-inch model. Here’s one guarantee in life – no matter what you acquire, somebody, somewhere, is going to have something newer, shinier, or more powerful.
Okay, but what’s the real harm in comparing ourselves to others? Comparison takes our eyes off the blessings that God has already given. When we compare ourselves or our things to others, we can become envious and often entitled. We begin to feel that we deserve more than they do. Far too easily, we can shift from a heart of gratitude to one of envy and greed. God wants us to be content with how He has blessed us. Don’t let comparison cheapen your appreciation for all that God has done in your life.

“…for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many.” – Nehemiah 7:2
As you think of the future, what will you leave behind? In terms of inheritance, will it be stocks and bonds? Property? An impressive, investment-worthy art collection? As important as planning for the future is, there is one aspect that so many fail to recognize. Every day, you’re creating a legacy that will live well beyond your death. More than any physical riches you pass onto others, it’s your character that will linger long after your life on earth has ended. So, the question to ask yourself is this: what story will your character tell?
“Unquestionable character” is one of the greatest gifts that we can leave our heirs. And yet, in the focused pursuit of amassing financial wealth, far too many fail to develop honesty, responsibility, compassion, or love for God and their fellow man into the lives of their kids.
If you want to leave behind a legacy of strong character, it starts with you. The way you live is the best example, because character is more easily “caught” than “taught.” You can’t leave a greater gift than teaching the next generation how to live with integrity and unquestionable character.
Wouldn’t you like to know that your life will be remembered for more than money? What a legacy to have our kids reflect on our lives and say, “My Mom and Dad kept God in the center of our family life and it showed. They are the finest people I’ve ever known.”

Your phone buzzes and you see a number you don’t recognize. Then you get a bogus voicemail saying you owe the IRS money or that your car warranty is about to expire. Sound familiar?
It’s a robocall, and if you’re like many Americans, you get far too many. These calls are not only annoying to receive but also challenging to spot. Some now involve sophisticated techniques such as neighborhood spoofing, which uses fake phone numbers with your area code to make you think the call is legitimate.
Fortunately, there are some simple ways to stop robocalls from interrupting your life. Here are a few to try:
**Add your number to the Do Not Call list
Joining the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry will inform telemarketers that you want to be left alone. You can add your number by visiting donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to add. It could take about a month for the calls to stop.
**Use your phone’s built-in weapons
iPhone: The Silence Unknown Callers option allows you to send spam straight to voicemail without your phone ringing. You’ll only receive calls from people in your contacts and those you’ve called or texted. To enable it, go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers.
If you’d rather not silence all unknown calls, you can block individual numbers that are scams. Open your Phone app and tap Recents. Then tap the circled “i” next to the number and tap Block this Caller.
Android: If you have a Google Pixel™, you can automatically screen suspected spam calls. Open your Phone app, tap the three dots in the top right corner, tap Settings, and tap Spam and Call Screen. Make sure See caller and spam ID is turned on, then tap Call Screen. Choose each type of call you want to filter and select “Automatically screen. Decline robocalls.”
Many phones also come with automatic spam detection that alerts you to possible robocalls and gives you the option to easily block or report the number.
To block individual numbers, open your Phone app, tap Recents and tap the icon next to the number. Then tap the three dots in the top right corner and tap Block numbers > Block. This should work for most Android devices.
For Samsung® devices, open your Phone app and tap Recents. Then tap the number, followed by the circled “i” underneath. Finally, tap Block at the bottom of the screen.
**Download a spam-fighting app
For Verizon Users: There are a number of programs to choose from, but Verizon® Protect subscribers have access to Call Filter Plus, a premium app that can screen numbers, block robocalls, identify their risk level, allow you to create custom spam lists, and more. If you don’t have Verizon Protect, Call Filter Plus is available as a paid stand-alone app. There’s also a free version, Verizon Call Filter, that offers basic call-blocking.
