It’s Not My Fault…Or Is It?

So then each of us will give an account of himself to God….Romans 14:12 ESV

Like lots of other people, we all suffer from the “it’s not my fault” mindset. We blame other people for our bad behavior because of our past. Eventually, we realize that even though we may not be responsible for what has happened to us, we are responsible for our behavior.

We see this over and over again in the Bible. Adam ate the fruit in the garden, but when God asked him about it, Adam said, “The woman you gave me, she gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” (Genesis 3:12 paraphrased) Eve gave me the fruit, and You gave me Eve, so it’s not my fault!

Eve had the same wrong mindset. She blamed the serpent for tempting her instead of owning up to her own free will to choose. (Genesis 3:13) Temptation will always be part of life, but we should grow to the level of maturity where we can be tempted and not five in to the flesh.

The Bible says that every person will stand before God and give an account of their life. God will never ask you to give an account for somebody else, and He will never ask somebody else to give an account for you. We each have to take responsibility for our own life and ask God to help us make the right choices.
