HOW TO READ THE BIBLE

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Ask the Holy Spirit for a desire to know God.We’re so easily distracted, lazy, or just plain selfish that spending time reading the Bible is often the first thing to go when life gets busy.  Yet, it’s through the Word of God that we truly get to know God. Thankfully, the gift of the Holy Spirit gives us an inner “want to” to study the Word and teaches us how to understand and apply scripture in our daily lives.

Choose a TIME, PLACE, and PLAN.Consistency is key in building a habit and online Bible study plans are everywhere. Choose one based on a book of the Bible or theme that’s relevant to your stage in life.

Look at Scripture in light of Scripture.Study verses within context. This means studying the Old Testament in light of the New Testament, a chapter in light of the book in which it is written, and a verse within a paragraph. Even cultural and historical background will help shed light into difficult passages and reveal how a 1,600 year old text can still apply today. That’s where teachers and Biblical commentaries come in handy.

Study with others. It’s in small groups with other believers where we can truly wrestle with our questions, fears, and even doubts. It’s in these intimate settings that we often realize we are not alone.

If you want to grow in your faith, dig into the Word of God. The biggest weapon the enemy uses to get us to fall into sin, is getting people to question the trustworthiness of God’s Word. So, how do you begin to trust God? It starts by studying His Word and allowing God’s Holy Spirit to teach us how to apply it to our lives.

ARE YOU THE ELDER SON?

ARE YOU THE ELDER SON?“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!”

Luke 15: 28-30

One of Jesus’ most famous parables is the story of the prodigal son. It’s a powerful story of a father’s unconditional love and mercy towards his rebellious son who returns home defeated and ashamed after blowing his inheritance. It’s a beautiful picture of God’s heart towards each and every one of us who at one time or another has taken life into our own hands and walked away from God.

The protagonist is clearly the younger son; however, Jesus specifically mentions a second son – the ELDER son. Watching the warm welcome this “screw-up“ son received, the elder son became angry: What about me? I’ve never once left your side or dishonored you, he complains to the father (my paraphrase). It’s just not fair! And he’s right; it’s not fair.

The father in the story represents God who offers forgiveness and grace free of charge –  once we reach that point of finally turning back towards Him. Now, for the younger sons among us, that unconditional love often translates to powerful life changing testimonies. But what about those of us who are the elder sons? Those of us who have been faithful Christians for years? It’s tempting to look down at those rebellious, younger sons with judgement and disdain. It’s amazing how quickly the sins of self-righteousness and pride can take root in our hearts.

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees often took on the elder son mentality. They saw only the sins of others and worked hard to earn God’s favor. And yet, today’s modern church is overrun with elder sons.  It’s often much easier to point out the flaws of others while remaining blind to our own. And yet, the Father loves BOTH sons. He pursues BOTH sons. His invitation to return home is available to BOTH of his sons. The younger son accepted. So, elder son, will you finally come home as well?

5 TIPS TO SPENDING TIME WITH GOD

“After (Jesus) had dismissed them, He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone.”

Matthew 14:23

Jesus regularly demonstrated the importance of spending time alone with God. Whether it was getting up early to start His day with prayer, or going to His Father in the midst of incredible stress and uncertainty –Jesus believed in the importance of putting His Father first. And if Jesus did it, so should we. But, where do we start?

  1. PRIORITIZE: If tomorrow you had an important meeting with your boss, wouldn’t you make every effort to show-up? So why do we regularly ignore or postpone our appointments with God? Is it because we are too busy, easily distracted or maybe just lazy? I love what the late Justice Scalia said to his clerk when he invited him to church. “I’m just too busy,” his clerk said.  Scalia replied, “Well, I’ll tell the creator of the universe that you were too busy to see Him.” Ask God to give you a desire to show up and meet with Him.
  2. TIME & PLACE: For Jesus, the time was in the morning before the day even got underway. For many with young kids, the mornings can be chaotic. Maybe the ideal time is during nap time or in the evenings. Choose a place that is quiet and free from distraction: maybe an office, study, or bedroom.
  3. PLAN: Choose a devotional guide to get started. Think of it like a spiritual warm-up –to help you focus. Check out a book by a Christian authors like Oswald Chambers, Sarah Young, Tim Keller or Max Lucado.
  4. PRAY: Prayer is simply pouring our hearts out to God. The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6: 9-13) is a great model to get started: it involves praise, praying for others, confession, telling Him our needs, and asking for forgiveness and strength in the face of temptation.
  5. LISTEN: Are you listening? Or simply doing all the talking? If we want to hear from God, we have to listen. God speaks to us through His Word.

Now what? Take the ’30 Day Challenge.’ Beginning today, commit to a daily time with God for the next month. Don’t let distractions or responsibilities get in the way; make God your first priority and see what He has to say.  It can literally change your life!

WHAT MAKES A WONDERFUL LIFE?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

What people on their deathbed do say, often has something to do with relationship regret. “I wish I had done more for someone;” or “I wish I had spent more time with them.” “I wish I had focused more on the relationships that matter.”

Can you relate? For some, you’re remembering a loved one, gone too soon. If only you’d taken advantage of the time you had together. For others, you’re well aware of how important certain people are in your life. You’re thinking, “I know this. There’s nothing new here.” While most everyone seems to understand this lesson intellectually, actually living it out proves to be much more difficult. We might “know” this in our heads, but are we living this out in our hearts?

The fact is, when people ask to identify the ultimate meaning of life, the response is always the same: relationships. Ultimate meaning is found in the relationships we have with those closest to us. Your most important relationship is, of course, with God, but your last moments on this earth will be so very empty if they are spent agonizing over failed relationships with family, friends, or those you may have wronged. So, who do you need to reach out to? Who do you need to prioritize? Don’t waste another moment. Act now to ensure that your last moments on earth aren’t full of relationship regret, but rather praising God for the life you’ve lived and anticipating the glory of heaven that awaits.
