No Love for Lovebugs, Origins of These Florida Pests

It happens around this time every year in Florida. Seemingly out of nowhere, swarms of lovebugs (also known as honeymoon flies) take to the air across our yards and roadways. While harmless to people, they can be quite the nuisance. Despite their recurring appearance, few people actually know much about these flying insects – and rumors of their origins are rampant.

Lovebugs are relatively small black insects with a red to reddish-brown color highlighting the back of the thorax (upper body). Scientifically named Plecia nearctica, they do not bite or sting people, animals or other insects. As larvae, they feed on decaying plants; as adults, they feed on nectar. The adults generally live for only a few days. They truly are quite harmless, so why do they infuriate so many people?

During their major semi-annual mating flights, hundreds of thousands of lovebugs can fill the air in a given area. In Florida, these flights usually take place in late April/early May and late August/early September. There can also be a smaller flight in December.

While mating, male and female lovebug pairs link together for days at a time, flying together in a kind of slow drift. Walking through a cloud of lovebugs is no fun, but driving through them is what tends to really irritate us. Lovebugs don’t move out of the way of cars and their bodies don’t stand much of a chance against your grille, hood or windshield.

The results of hundreds of squished lovebug bodies decorating your vehicle aren’t just aesthetically unpleasing, they’re also quite damaging. The sheer volume of them can potentially clog your radiator intake, causing your car to overheat. There are also dangers with visual impairment related to their bodies obscuring windshields.

It’s the fluids from inside lovebugs’ bodies, however, that cause most people’s biggest complaint. They become pretty acidic after a short time, dissolving away your car’s paint job. To prevent paint damage as much as possible, be sure to keep a good coat of wax on your vehicle and wash the bodies off at every opportunity. The longer they’re on, the harder they are to wash off and the more damage they will do.

Some people blame lovebugs on scientists at the University of Florida in Gainesville! The myth claims lovebugs were genetically engineered by UF entomologists attempting to create a species of sterile female insects that would mate with male mosquitos, preventing them from creating offspring. Through that process, the scientists mistakenly created the lovebugs which somehow escaped into the wild. A fun story, but totally untrue.

Lovebugs are actually from Central America. They migrated through Texas and Louisiana, before making their way to Florida. They can now also be found in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia among other states, even into South Carolina. Still, Florida seems to be where their populations thrive.

While you’d probably prefer that lovebugs not visit twice a year, they’re much less harmful than many bugs that share our homes and yards year-round. Spiders, ants, fleas and other household pests present much bigger problems. So, have a little compassion for the lovebug…and remember to wash your car when they get in your way!

Happy Birthday if yours is in May!

Tips for internet and email security

Here’s a sneaky trick used by many hackers: they purchase and set up a fraudulent website that is a close misspelling of a legitimate one. Example: http://www.faceboook.com (extra “o”) or http://www.dropbox.net (instead of .com). All you have to do is accidentally fat-finger ONE letter in the URL and up pops a very legitimate-looking fake copy of the site you were trying to get to – and the login and links are full of keylogger malware and virus landmines waiting for you to click on them. This is particularly important for any social networks you belong to.

Two Tips: One, bookmark key sites you frequently visit. But even better, have us install a web gateway security product that BLOCKS sites that are suspicious and fraudulent. That way, even if you click on a link to a phishing site, get directed to an infected site or accidentally type in the wrong URL, the site will be blocked, protecting you and your employees.

Start the day

START THE DAY RIGHT “In the morning, Oh Lord, you hear my voice.  In the morning, I lay my requests before you and I wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3

Is prayer a vital part of your life? Many Christians would say – of course! However, if someone looked at your life, at your priorities and how you spend your time – would that statement still appear true? If we’re honest with ourselves, the topic of prayer can be very convicting.

So are you praying? Is prayer a key part of your life? A priority? Think about this: When you get up in the morning, is your first thought about God or checking your phone?

The Psalmist wrote about starting each day with God. Do you have that same priority? In today’s hectic and busy world it’s so easy to rush into our day without giving much thought to God or to prayer, but starting the day with God gets our day started right. Prayer recalibrates our hearts for life’s ups and downs.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it this way: “The prayer of the morning will determine the day.” So are you praying? Perhaps it’s time you started putting God into your morning routine. I guarantee that He has something more important to say than your phone, social media or even that important email. Take a moment to start your day right by starting it with God.

FAITH REFINED IN THE FIRE

FAITH REFINED IN THE FIRE“These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” 1 Peter 1:7

Ever found yourself in a season of life where you just feel a little beat up? Have you ever cried out, “Lord, will it ever end?”  Well, in case you haven’t noticed, it doesn’t. But the good news is that with each faith-testing experience, our ability to deal with these trials and tribulations becomes better and our faith grows stronger.

In this scripture, God compares our faith to a most precious and beautiful metal – gold. But when mined, this precious metal doesn’t look very precious. It’s dirty and dark. So, how does gold the brilliant, beautiful, and expensive metal we’ve come to expect?

A refiner takes the gold and slowly melts it, carefully raising the temperature – but never to the point of boiling. As it melts, the impurities rise to the surface and are removed, leaving behind a beautiful pot of gold. Here’s the amazing part: the refiner knows the gold is ready only when he can look into the melting pot and see his reflection. In other words, the only way gold will become more precious is when it’s placed in the fire.

It’s the same in our lives – often, the impurities of our lives must be exposed to the fire so that the Lord can scoop up the filth that us revealed under “fire.” And just like the refiner, God will never allow us to boil. Finally, when it’s all said and done, God can look upon us and see the beauty of His reflection in our lives.

Let’s not despise the trials we’re facing today – on the contrary – let’s embrace them. The Lord is using these things to prepare us to do great things for Him. Instead of anger or bitterness when a tough season hits, ask the Lord how you can grow in character and faith.  And watch how the Lord blesses you through the fire.
