“For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” – Matthew 6:14 

Most of us have either read, heard, or spoken the Lord’s prayer. But, have you ever noticed the presence of a little two-letter word in the Lord’s prayer? It says “And forgive us of our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” Did you catch that? The word “as” implies that we cannot be forgiven until we offer that same forgiveness to others. In case we miss the “as,” Jesus makes it very clear in the next verse: “But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”(Matthew 6:15)

Forgiving someone who has treated you poorly, said evil things about you, even broken up your family, is a very difficult thing to do. It takes Godly intervention to truly offer forgiveness to people who have deeply wounded you. But God commands us to do so, and God would never command us to do anything that He wouldn’t provide the ability to do.

Right now, pray for God to give you the strength to forgive those who have hurt you. Not only will God give you the power to do so, but He will also empower you supernaturally to love them, even though you hate what they did. Remember, bitterness is the poison we swallow, causing us to wish for evil things. Enjoy the release of this terrible burden by experiencing the cleansing power of forgiveness.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13: 34

We are all unique. We are all distinct. We are all different. Yet, God desires for us to live in unity. Does this seem easy to you? Today, there is incredible animosity in the world. One ethnic group despising another. One family member hating another. One neighbor feuding against another.

From siblings to CEOs ­– unity does not come naturally. Just look at a toddler. The first words learned are often “NO” and “MINE.” If Christ’s desire was for harmony, where does all this hatred come from?  Sin. Let’s go back to the beginning in Genesis 3. Sin poisoned the world, separating man from God. The result? Hatred and disunity.

Jesus says to His followers, to the Church, “I want you to be different. I want you to love one another, just as I have loved you. You are different. You are all unique in the body of Christ but love one another. Then, when others look at you, they will see God. When the church is united amid its diversity, it becomes a reflection of the One True God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all in one.” [Paraphrased]

Take a look at your life. Are you reflecting the unity in diversity of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? In what areas are you lacking unity with other believers? Ask God for help overcoming any animosity toward others. Ask God to help you be a force for unity amidst the diversity of Christ’s church.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

• Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering when around others.
