Steps we can take to help us stay cancer-free

Here are some key tips for improving our odds of living cancer-free:

  • Quit tobacco in all its forms: There’s no secret here that smoking and other tobacco use is the leading risk for cancer and other serious diseases. Cigarette smoking alone is believed to cause about 30 percent of cancer deaths in the U.S.
  • Get vaccinated: Certain viruses and bacteria can cause cancer in humans. But there are vaccines approved for use in protecting against infection two such viruses – the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer, and hepatitis B.
  • Drink in moderation: Studies have linked alcohol use to an increased risk of certain cancers. Men are encouraged to limit their drinking to two drinks a day, and women to one drink a day.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity has been linked to a number of cancers, and being overweight may cause the body to produce more estrogen and insulin, two hormones that can stimulate cancer growth.
  • Avoid UV rays: The ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is the leading cause of skin cancers. Take steps to avoid exposure by covering up and using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
  • Get screened: Common cancer screenings, such as mammograms, colorectal screenings, PAP tests, and prostate exams, lead to early identification and treatment.

These tips, along with staying physically active and eating a healthy diet with a focus on plant-based foods, are our best defense in the fight against cancer.

This is the Way

Your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it”, whenever you turn to the right or to the left. (Isaiah 30:21)

We all need direction and guidance, especially in the face of a new situation. When facing a new challenge or circumstance, the first question to ask yourself is, “Is this God’s will for me?” And the second question is, “Do I have inner peace about this?”

When our hearts are right and our motives are pure, we can trust God to provide everything we need each step of the way and fill us with peace as we move forward.

We follow God by taking one step of obedience at a time. As we take each step and see God working, we know it is safe to take another step. It is not wise to merely follow our personal desires, fears, emotions or good ideas, or the advise of others. In your quiet time with God, ask for His direction. Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will direct your steps.

The more you listen for God’s leading and learn to follow Him, the easier it becomes to hear and follow Him.
