COMPARISON CAN LEAD TO DESTRUCTION

“…for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances…” – Philippians 4:11b

An armchair philosopher once declared, “Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It’s cheaper.” I applaud his creative solution to this age-old problem, but prefer God’s advice on the subject. God tells us to just not play that game at all.

We fall into a destructive trap when we compare ourselves to others, because the fact is, there will always be someone who has more than we do. On Monday we are so proud of our shiny new car, but on Tuesday, a newer one is parked in the driveway next door. And that 52″ TV will soon pale in comparison to your brother-in-law’s 68″ inch model. Here’s a guarantee in life – no matter what you acquire, somebody, somewhere, is going to have something newer, shinier, and more powerful.

So what’s the harm in comparing ourselves to others? Comparison takes our eyes off the blessings God put into our lives. When we compare our things with others, we get envious and can begin to feel that we deserve more than they do. Comparison cheapens our appreciation for what God has done in our lives, and we can easily shift from gratitude to envy. God wants us to be content with how He has blessed us in life.

Hate 2 wait

“Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:30-31

It’s confession time – I hate to wait! I want what I want and I want it now! Waiting makes me angry, frustrated and at times even offended.  Take traffic, for instance. Traffic feels like a very personal assault against me. Don’t all those other drivers understand how important MY schedule is? How dare all these other cars slow me down when I have such important things to do. Can you relate? Maybe for you it’s being put on hold during a phone call. Or maybe your child is still stuck on the waiting list for that magnet school she has to attend. Maybe it’s a painfully slow line at your morning coffee shop.

In our fast-paced culture, waiting means losing control. Think about it. People used to farm their own food; planting a field and waiting for the crop took months. Today, we run to the nearest drive-through. Remember pen pals? People used to write letters (by hand) and then wait several days for them to be received. Today we send a text message. What about the news? From newspapers to world headlines, everything is at the push of a button – available instantly.

So, why is waiting so hard? Waiting is a very real reminder that the world does not revolve around me. Waiting messes with my plans. Waiting forces me to see and hear things that I’d rather ignore. Simply, waiting reveals that I am not in control. God, however, tells us that waiting is important. In fact, the Bible shows us that waiting is necessary and needed in our lives.

  • God uses waiting to get our attention.
  • Waiting reminds us that God is in control when I am not.
  • Waiting reveals God’s plans, not mine.
  • Waiting allows God to speak into our lives in ways we could never hear before.
  • Waiting shifts our perspective to see and experience more of God’s love and grace in our lives.

Are you hating the wait? Step back and give God your frustrations. Be honest. From the small annoyances to the heavy burdens, ask God to help you trade the hate in the wait for hope in the promises of God’s love and grace.

A GENERATION LIKE NO OTHER

“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind, regard one another as more important than yourselves;”  Philippians 2:3

Today, we honor our war veterans. (We should honor them every day for the sacrificial service they gave to our country.)

While we honor all of our war veterans, if you visit the mall in Washington, D.C., you will see the most recently built memorial, the National World War II Memorial. It is expansive, featuring marble, fountains, columns and beautiful landscaping. It’s a grand celebration of the greatest generation America has ever produced.

There is some important symbolism that is often missed with this memorial. While the Second World War came before them, the monuments for the veterans of Korea and Vietnam were actually built first. Years before this generation was honored, more recent events were memorialized.

How appropriate. This generation was raised during the depression, when neighbors personally sacrificed to keep friends from starving. Just as that crisis was ending, the men left to fight evil on foreign soil, while the women laced up their boots and worked in this country’s industry. After the war, they brought America to historical levels of prosperity, while saving the economies of the very people they had just defeated. Then they raised a new generation, and lived their lives well, and all the while, stayed quiet about the price they paid to do such great things for our world.

Even though many of its honorees never lived to see its completion, it is so very appropriate that it was the last war memorial to be built. Just like the memorial they inspired, this amazing generation always put others first and themselves last. Thankfully, Jesus taught us that in the end, “the last shall be first.”

Happy Halloween!!
