Password safety

A weak password is still one of the most common ways hackers break in.

Thanks to sophisticated brute-force-attack software readily available online, hackers can try tens of millions of possible password combinations per second. For example, hacking software can guess a five-character password in under three hours. If you only use lowercase letters, it’s 11.9 seconds.

You KNOW you need to have a better password than “password” or “letmein” if you have any hope of keeping hackers out of your PC, but what does a “strong” password mean?

A good password should be at least eight characters long (or longer!) and have a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols that are hard to guess. Don’t use dictionary words with proper capitalization because they’re easy to guess (like Password123#). Even though it meets the requirements we just discussed, it’s easily hacked; remember, hackers have sophisticated password-hacking software that will run 24/7/365.

Cybercrime is at an all-time high, and hackers are setting their sights on small and medium businesses who are “low hanging fruit.” Don’t be their next victim!

Be Excellent

Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as something done for the Lord and not for men. Colossisans 3:23

Being excellent simply means that we do the best we can with what we have. God is excellent, and He has called us to be excellent also. So we should never be satisfied to just do what we have to do in order to get by. We should always go the extra mile and do an excellent job at whatever we are tasked to do.

Mediocrity seems to be normal in society today, but it isn’t the will of God. If we are going to do a job, we can and should give it out best. We can take excellent care of all that we have. We can have excellent attitudes, treat people as valuable, and realize that we represent God at all times.

It is important not only to do the best you can when people are watching, but to do when nobody is watching. God sees all that we do and we would be wise to remember that our reward comes from Him.

Pray to the Father that you know He is excellent in all His ways. Help me be an excellent person who brings glory to Him.

HOW TO READ THE BIBLE

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Ask the Holy Spirit for a desire to know God.We’re so easily distracted, lazy, or just plain selfish that spending time reading the Bible is often the first thing to go when life gets busy.  Yet, it’s through the Word of God that we truly get to know God. Thankfully, the gift of the Holy Spirit gives us an inner “want to” to study the Word and teaches us how to understand and apply scripture in our daily lives.

Choose a TIME, PLACE, and PLAN.Consistency is key in building a habit and online Bible study plans are everywhere. Choose one based on a book of the Bible or theme that’s relevant to your stage in life.

Look at Scripture in light of Scripture.Study verses within context. This means studying the Old Testament in light of the New Testament, a chapter in light of the book in which it is written, and a verse within a paragraph. Even cultural and historical background will help shed light into difficult passages and reveal how a 1,600 year old text can still apply today. That’s where teachers and Biblical commentaries come in handy.

Study with others. It’s in small groups with other believers where we can truly wrestle with our questions, fears, and even doubts. It’s in these intimate settings that we often realize we are not alone.

If you want to grow in your faith, dig into the Word of God. The biggest weapon the enemy uses to get us to fall into sin, is getting people to question the trustworthiness of God’s Word. So, how do you begin to trust God? It starts by studying His Word and allowing God’s Holy Spirit to teach us how to apply it to our lives.

ARE YOU THE ELDER SON?

ARE YOU THE ELDER SON?“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!”

Luke 15: 28-30

One of Jesus’ most famous parables is the story of the prodigal son. It’s a powerful story of a father’s unconditional love and mercy towards his rebellious son who returns home defeated and ashamed after blowing his inheritance. It’s a beautiful picture of God’s heart towards each and every one of us who at one time or another has taken life into our own hands and walked away from God.

The protagonist is clearly the younger son; however, Jesus specifically mentions a second son – the ELDER son. Watching the warm welcome this “screw-up“ son received, the elder son became angry: What about me? I’ve never once left your side or dishonored you, he complains to the father (my paraphrase). It’s just not fair! And he’s right; it’s not fair.

The father in the story represents God who offers forgiveness and grace free of charge –  once we reach that point of finally turning back towards Him. Now, for the younger sons among us, that unconditional love often translates to powerful life changing testimonies. But what about those of us who are the elder sons? Those of us who have been faithful Christians for years? It’s tempting to look down at those rebellious, younger sons with judgement and disdain. It’s amazing how quickly the sins of self-righteousness and pride can take root in our hearts.

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees often took on the elder son mentality. They saw only the sins of others and worked hard to earn God’s favor. And yet, today’s modern church is overrun with elder sons.  It’s often much easier to point out the flaws of others while remaining blind to our own. And yet, the Father loves BOTH sons. He pursues BOTH sons. His invitation to return home is available to BOTH of his sons. The younger son accepted. So, elder son, will you finally come home as well?
