The power of patience…

He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is quick-tempered exalts folly.” – Proverbs 14:29

One of the Merriam Webster definitions of patience is: “steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity.” It’s not the most uplifting definition. Being patient is hard because as humans, we have a tendency to want what we want at that particular moment. Unfortunately, it seems that life is often a test of patience.

I struggle with waiting – whether it’s sitting in traffic or at a restaurant. Why, I’d rather drive five miles out of the way than sit stuck in traffic. I get impatient when I’m facing a deadline and get interrupted, or when someone says they’ll do something and then fall through.

Where do you struggle with patience? Do you ever pray, “Lord, give me some patience, now!” Let me suggest a few practical ways to learn patience:

  1. Take a deep breath and pray for self-control.
  2. When people anger you, if possible, retreat for a moment. Take time to back off and get control of your emotions.
  3. Confront fairly, and seek to listen and understand – first.  When needed, be sure to forgive.
  4. Remember, the greatest motive for patience is remembering God’s patience with us.

Patience is a precious commodity, for it’s a powerful way to win the respect of others and turn a potential enemy into a friend.

RIP- James Williams

James worked part time at the north side car wash. He will be missed.

LAKELAND – James ‘Jim’ E. Williams, a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, son-in-law, brother-in-law, nephew-in-law, cousin and friend, passed away unexpectedly on June 1, 2019 in Lakeland, FL. Born on August 18, 1960 to Claire Williams and Beatrice (Stills) of Corning, NY, he was the youngest in a close-knit family of 7. Jim spent most of his life in Corning and was famously known for riding his bicycle in all kinds of weather conditions to and from work (just a short 26-mile loop) on a regular basis.
After retiring from Polly-O Dairy with 32.5 years of service, Jim and his wife, Chrissy, relocated to Lakeland, FL. Jim continued to work part-time for Lakeland Regal Automotive and led fitness/personal training classes in his community. In no time at all, Jim became very well-known and appreciated in his new community.
No matter who Jim encountered throughout his life, he never failed to inspire, motivate or encourage them to lead a healthier lifestyle. Jim will always be remembered as a patient, calm, quick-witted, humorous, kind-hearted, generous and caring man. He will always be thought of as someone who had a gift of storytelling that would leave you in stitches. Jim was a true gentleman who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.
Jim is predeceased by his parents Beatrice and Claire Williams, his sister, Marion Sampson of Horseheads, NY, his brother Claire Williams of Elmira, NY and his father-in-law, Paul Yorio of Lakeland, FL. Jim is survived by his wife of 17 years, Chrissy Williams of Lakeland, FL; sisters Edna Williams of Corning, NY, Grace Williams (Gary Hetzel) of Corning, NY, Paul (Janet) Williams of Winston-Salem, NC and Dorothy Williams of Geneva, NY. Nieces and Nephews, Morgan Sampson, Jr., Alycia Griffin, Taswell Henderson, Jr., Andre Henderson, Lamar Williams, Jaymie Heard, Covan Heard, Morgyn and Jon Yorio and Rachael Hetzel; mother-in-law, Lynda Yorio (Regis Finnegan), brother-in-law, Mike (Ellen) Yorio.
The celebration of life service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 (Viewing Hours 1-3pm with the service immediately following) at the Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 2125 S. Bartow Hwy., Lakeland, FL 33801. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Lighthouse Ministries, Inc. at

RIGHT VALUES START IN THE RIGHT PLACE

Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.”

Exodus 20:3

Did you realize that every single person on earth has values? Now, they may not be GOOD values, but values, nonetheless. Even the mafia and drug lords have values. Confusion about values comes because man starts at the wrong place – himself.

We’re filled with a culture of many people that are seeking to do what is “right in their own eyes.” This has led to chaos – morally, spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. I urge you to start with God’s number one commandment, “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Some argue that whatever is most important to you is really your god. So, what makes the top of your priorities list? Is it family, success, money, power, possessions, or happiness? What is your most important value? When it’s anyone or anything besides God, it’s a ‘god’ (little ‘g’) and our value orientation gets out of whack.

When we start from the wrong place, we always wind up lost and confused – following false ‘gods.’ God says, “Start with Me; put Me first and all other values have a way of falling into place.” It’s the key to having the right values.

Tips for you to do BEFORE you loose your computer…

So you’re in the car on the way home from Starbucks, basking in the glow of consuming your triple-shot, low-foam, extra-hot pumpkin-spice latte when you suddenly realize your laptop has gone missing. You drive back like the caffeinated lunatic you are, only to discover no one has turned it in. What do you do? That depends on what precautions you have (or haven’t!) taken.

First, if you’ve properly encrypted your data, password-protected the access to your device and shut down and logged off all key applications, you’ve got a bit more time to respond. But the first thing to do, whether or not you’ve taken those precautionary measures, is to notify your IT department (us) that you’ve lost your device. That will allow us to change passwords and lock access to applications and data a thief may gain access to via your unprotected laptop. We can also remotely wipe your device to make sure no one will be able to gain access to the data stored on your computer. (Which is also why it’s CRITICAL to back up your data on a daily basis!)

Next, change ALL the passwords to every website you log in to, starting with any sites that contain financial data (your bank account) or company data. If your laptop contained medical records, financial information or other sensitive data (like social security numbers, birthdays, etc.), then you need to contact a qualified attorney to understand what you may be required to do by law to notify individuals who may be affected. Quite simply, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; so make sure you’re engaging us to encrypt and back up your data, as well as put remote monitoring software on all mobile devices. Set a pin-code lock or password requirement to access a device after 10 minutes of inactivity, and get into the habit of logging out of websites when you’re done using them.

Cybercrime is at an all-time high, and hackers are setting their sights on small and medium businesses who are “low hanging fruit.” Don’t be their next victim!
