Forgiveness

One of the most important parts of love: forgiveness | 1 Alliance Counseling & Psychotherapy Services
DO YOUR ENEMIES CONTROL YOU?
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” –  Matthew 5:43-45

An enemy is anyone who is against you. It’s someone who is not for you. An enemy can take the form of a family member, a classmate, a co-worker, a neighbor, or even a fellow believer. We all have enemies, but Jesus tells us to love them! How is that possible?

Well, keep reading, because the answer lies immediately after Jesus tells us to love our enemies. “Pray for those who persecute you,” He says. Now, it’s mighty hard to pray for our enemies when we’re really determined to hold onto that anger. Why? Because when we start praying for them, God has a way of softening our hearts. We begin looking at that person as God sees them.

Slowly, God works in our lives and changes our hearts as we pray for them. This is what Jesus did for us when we were His enemies: He went to the cross. Jesus prayed for us while on the cross paying the penalty for our sins. “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,” Jesus prayed.

Accepting Jesus’ forgiveness changes US so that we’re able to forgive OTHERS.

Does that mean you’re going to like your enemies? In most cases, probably not. But it does mean that God can give you the supernatural power to love your enemies and to respond with love and respect no matter how they treat us.

Let’s follow Jesus’ example, in faith. When we give God control in this area, our enemies no longer control us.

THE SECRET TO CONTENTMENT

“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:11-13

One phone call. That’s all it takes to turn a life upside down. Everyone has a story of life spinning out of control. Maybe it was an accident, a call from the doctor, a relationship that ended, or an unexpected layoff. We know that everything can change in an instant. It can all be gone tomorrow. And if it IS gone, will we still be happy?

No, this is not a trick question. Life is uncertain. We are not in control. If being in control is the only way to be happy, then we are destined for a life of chasing temporary happiness in things that fade as quickly as they are found. The apostle Paul talks about finding true happiness, true contentment, that lasts through the ups and downs of life.

True happiness is not about what we have, but what God has done for us. Our happiness is in the Provider, not in the provision. Our happiness is in the Giver, not in the gifts given. Think about it. Everything we have is a gift from God. The ability to earn income comes from Him. The economy that keeps our investments stable is from Him. The health that we experience today is from God.

Is there contentment in your life? True happiness is found by those who acknowledge and daily live in the reality that they are dependent on God. If you’ve been seeking happiness in all the wrong places, spend time today putting your trust back in the one who provides, not in the things He provides.

Two Wolves

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people… He said,“My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all.

One is Evil.  It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good.  It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:  “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”~Cherokee Proverb

Feed your good wolf!
